Worse Than Fiction: The Poetry of Protest

EAT THE RICH
The rich go well
With sour cream
Since most of them are white
You can substitute milk
If that’s what you have in your tent
Just be sure to use one percent

PEPPER SPRAY
Pepper spray’s not funny
When you get it in your eye
Pepper spray, it really stings
It makes you want to cry
Kind of like inequality
End the Fed!
Wait, which one’s the Fed?

OUR DEMANDS

BAILOUTS
There once was a badly run bank
Whose balance sheet totally stank
But instead of letting it collapse
Treasury kissy-kissed its ass
And even though
That was three years ago
We are pissed off about it now
So the government should go
Back in time
And not do whatever it was it did
Except for the parts that benefited us
Like extra unemployment insurance
And the stimulus funds
That went to our home states

CORPORATE AMERICA
Corporate America really sucks
Can we still go pee in Starbucks?

WE ARE THE 99%
It matters not
That we were never elected
Our group is more
Self-selected
We are, you see, the ones who care
That the rich ruined our country
That the world is unfair
Just please, if you could, officers,
Please keep the homeless people
Out of the park they used to occupy
So we can protest against inequality
Thank you

ROUSING CHEER
One, two, three, four
The cops are coming through the door
Five, six, seven, wait
Where’s everybody going?
